A listing with no photos is a listing people scroll past. Doesn’t matter how good you are at the job. Someone sitting in Darwin deciding who to ring will land on a grey box with no picture and keep going.
You don’t need a photographer. You need about ten minutes and your phone.
The three shots
One of you or your crew. A face people can recognise later at the tavern or in the queue at the markets on the foreshore. Out here people want to know who is turning up to their place. A plain photo of you standing in front of the ute beats a logo every time. If you’ve got a crew, get them in it.
One of the work, the product or the place. The deck you built. The fish on the board at the end of a charter. The tray of scones. The bathroom you just finished, cleaned up, no rubbish bin in the corner. Pick the job you’re proudest of.
One wide shot of where you are. The shed. The boat on the trailer. The shopfront. The view off the verandah. This one tells people where they’re going and what to look for when they get there.
Getting them decent
Phone photos are absolutely fine. Nobody expects a studio.
Shoot in daylight. Early morning or late afternoon is kinder than the middle of the day, when everything goes washed out and the shadows are hard.
Wipe the lens first. Your phone lives in your pocket with dust and sunscreen on it, and a smeared lens is why half your photos look foggy.
Hold it level and get closer than feels natural. Fill the frame with the thing you’re showing.
Don’t put text over the top. No price stickers, no “CALL NOW” banners. It makes a good photo look like a flyer, and people trust it less.
You can swap your photos out at any time if you need to.
Take the photos now while you’re thinking about it. You can always take better ones later.
Which photo have you been putting off taking?
Not on the directory yet? A basic listing is free and takes about five minutes.
