If you’re planning to spend Territory Day at Dundee Beach, here’s everything you need to know about the history, fireworks rules, safety considerations and where to enjoy the celebrations.

What is Territory Day?

Territory Day celebrates the day the Northern Territory achieved self-government on 1 July 1978, giving Territorians greater control over their own affairs.

Before 1978, the Northern Territory was administered by the Australian Government in Canberra, with limited local decision-making powers. On 1 July 1978, the Territory gained self-government, allowing Territorians to elect their own Legislative Assembly and make decisions on many local matters. Territory Day was established to mark this important milestone and has since grown into one of the Northern Territory’s most iconic celebrations.

Over the decades, Territory Day has become much more than a historical anniversary. For many locals, it represents the Territory’s independent spirit, strong sense of community and unique way of life. The fireworks tradition has become a major part of the celebrations, bringing families, friends and communities together across the Territory each year.

For many Territorians, Territory Day is affectionately known as “Cracker Night”, with fireworks becoming a major part of the celebrations since the early 1980s. In fact, the Northern Territory is the only place in Australia where members of the public can legally purchase and use fireworks without a permit on Territory Day.

When Can You Buy and Use Fireworks?

Fireworks can legally be purchased on 1 July from approved retailers.

They can only be legally used between 6:00pm and 11:00pm on Territory Day.

Any unused fireworks must be disposed of appropriately, as it is illegal to possess them after the approved period.

You’ll need to purchase your crackers in town or as far out as Berry Springs. Even if you aren’t buying any it’s worth going into the make shift stores to see the range! Every man and little boys dream hahahah! I still remember our first cracker night and our sons faces when they went into the cracker shop with their dad!

Fireworks Safety at Dundee Beach

Territory Day is a lot of fun, but safety must come first.

Fireworks Safety Tips

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Keep children supervised at all times.
  • Never relight a firework that has failed to ignite.
  • Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.
  • Be mindful of dry grass and fire risks.
  • Never throw fireworks at people, vehicles or animals.
  • Dispose of used fireworks responsibly.

The Dundee region is surrounded by bushland, making fire safety particularly important during the dry season.

Please Respect Local Accommodation Providers

If you’re staying at holiday accommodation, caravan parks or campgrounds, always check the property’s Territory Day rules before using fireworks.

All accommodation providers prohibit fireworks for safety reasons, particularly during the dry season when fire risk is high.

If you’re staying in shared accommodation or camping near others, be considerate of your neighbours and avoid creating unnecessary noise, smoke or safety hazards. Go to the designated areas to safety use your fireworks.

Please Take Your Rubbish Home

One of the challenges after Territory Day is the amount of firework debris left behind.

If you’re celebrating at the boat ramp, beach or foreshore:

  • Pick up spent fireworks.
  • Dispose of rubbish correctly.
  • Leave the area as clean as you found it.

A few minutes of cleanup helps keep Dundee looking great for everyone.

Think About Your Dogs

While fireworks are exciting for people, they can be extremely stressful for pets.

Many dogs become anxious during Territory Day due to the loud noises and bright flashes.

Consider:

  • Keeping dogs indoors in a secure area.
  • Playing music or running a fan to reduce noise.
  • Ensuring identification tags are up to date.
  • Speaking with your vet if your pet experiences severe anxiety.

If you’re travelling to Dundee with dogs, it’s worth planning ahead and choosing accommodation suited to pets.
