Barra or Blue Fishing Charters gets its name from the question every angler dreams about, and there’s a good chance your dream splits in two. In one version you’re tucked into a quiet creek arm at first light, working a lure past the snags for that metre-long barra. In the other you’re wide of the coast on the open blue, rod bent double as a golden snapper or Spanish mackerel does its best to stay down deep. With Barra or Blue Fishing Charters, you don’t have to pick a dream. The name is the menu. Barra, blue, or a trip that gives you both.
Why Barra or Blue picked the right home port
Dundee Beach sits about 130 kilometres southwest of Darwin, not far from where the Finniss River meets the Timor Sea. That meeting point is the whole secret. Within a short run of the boat ramp you have creeks and river mouths full of barramundi, reef country holding golden snapper, coral trout and black jewfish, and open bluewater where the mackerel run. Very few places in Australia put that much variety within reach of a single day on the water.

It’s why serious Territory anglers have been quietly making the drive down for decades, and why a charter out of Dundee has become one of the Top End’s great tourism experiences. You’re not commuting to the fish. You’re launching from the middle of them.

Meet Barra or Blue Fishing Charters
Barra or Blue started with owner Lincoln, a fishing guide with more than a decade of experience across Top End waters, and has grown into a team of experienced local guides who share the same obsession with putting people on fish. That local knowledge is the difference between a day of casting and a day of catching. Tides, seasons, barometric pressure, which creek fires after a storm and which reef holds fish on the neap tides. It’s the stuff you can’t Google, and it comes standard with every guide on every trip.

Charters can be customised to any waterway within a 200 kilometre radius of the Darwin area, which means the itinerary bends around you. After your first barra? Your guide will put you on forgiving water with plenty of action. Seasoned angler with a species hit list? Say the word and the boat points wherever the fishing is hottest.

Meet Kurt, one of the experienced guides on the Barra or Blue team. Whether you’re chasing a cheeky barramundi in the creeks or a solid mackerel or Jew Fish out on the blue, Kurt’s local knowledge of the tides and terrain means you’re in good hands on the water.
Choose your charter
Barra or Blue runs private, shared and extended charters, so there’s an option for solo travellers, couples, families and full fishing crews.
Full day shared charter runs around 8 hours targeting either barramundi or bluewater species, with lunch, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, quality rods, tackle and bait all supplied.
Full day private charters give your group the whole boat and the freedom to fish river or bluewater, with everything supplied for the day.
Extended charters run from 2 to 6 days and are the signature Barra or Blue experience. These all-inclusive packages combine multiple days on the water with comfortable accommodation and delicious meals, so the only thing left to organise is which arm you’ll cast into first.
Hotel pickup and drop off can be arranged, with return transfers from Darwin available for day trips. For current pricing and availability, head to the Barra or Blue bookings page.

The hit list
Target species around Dundee Beach read like a Territory bucket list. Barramundi is the headline act, the fish that draws anglers from every corner of the country. Behind it comes a supporting cast most destinations would kill for. Golden snapper, coral trout, red emperor, black jewfish and Spanish mackerel, plus plenty of surprise guests that keep every drop interesting.

The beauty of fishing with a guide who knows this coast is that the day follows the fish. If the barra are quiet on the run-out tide, you might spend the afternoon over the reefs filling the esky instead. Nobody goes home wondering what might have been.

Stay and fish with BnB Dundee
Here’s where Barra or Blue turns a day trip into a proper Top End holiday. The team also runs BnB Dundee, a peaceful family-friendly place to stay just 300 metres from the beach and 600 metres from the Lodge of Dundee and the boat ramp.
The main house has 5 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and sleeps 10, with full kitchen facilities, a pool, barbecue, balcony and a sit-up bar for the post-fishing debrief. Two separate cabins each sleep 3 more, with their own kitchenette and bathroom. Wake to birdsong and ocean waves, walk to the water, fish all day, then come home to a pool and a barbecue. That’s the Dundee Beach rhythm, and it’s very easy to get used to.
For groups and families, pairing the house with a couple of charter days is about the easiest fishing holiday you can plan in the Territory. One booking, one location, everything walkable.

The boats
Comfort matters when you’re spending 8 hours on the water, and this is where Barra or Blue stands out. The purpose-built sports fishing boats are fast, comfortable and fitted with state-of-the-art electronics and full shade. Each boat carries a full-sized esky to keep your drinks cold and your catch fresh for the trip home. Premium rods, reels, tackle and bait are all supplied, so you can step aboard with nothing but a hat and sunscreen if you like.
